Botulinum Toxin- A

What is botulinum toxin A, and what can be treated with it?

Botulinum toxin A is a naturally occurring bacterial protein that reduces or even blocks the muscle activity. It is being injected directly into the muscles and it is being used therapeutically in medicine (e.g. in ophthalmology) for more than 40 years already. In our practice, botulinum toxin A is usually used for the treatment of increased sweating (hyperhidrosis), migraine and in cases of too strong muscular activity (e.g. in the face).

How is botulinum toxin A being used and how does it work?

A small amount of botulinum toxin A is injected by means of a fine needle in the area to be treated. There it selectively blocks the nerve impulses. The effect of the substance usually occurs after 3-5 days and lasts for a period of 4-6 months.

Is the treatment painful and associated with risks?

Since the treatment is carried out with the finest needles, the injections are practically painless. In some cases, a slight burning sensation may occur. Occasionally site irritations may form in the area of injection as well as swelling, and small bruises. These undesired symptoms subside after few days. Very rarely can occur with injections in the area of the eyebrows (eg migraine) a temporary bagging the eyelid. Also, this side effect is temporary - ankh on the present state of science are not long-term side effects in the treatment of botulinum toxin A is known.

Safety through certified practitioners

Treatments with botulinum toxin A are effective and safe. Of course it is essential here that there is exact knowledge of the operation, the dosage and the muscles of the face - otherwise asymmetries are possible despite all the certainty. All physicians at the Laser Medicine Center Rhine-Ruhr regularly conduct treatments with botulinum toxin-A. Mr. Gansel is a certified member and speaker of the German Society for botulinum toxin therapy DGBT. Further information concerning the society and about botulinum toxin A, can be found here www.dgbt.de.
