Excessive Sweating - Hyperhidrosis

Sweating is healthy ...

Sweating is essential to life and serves the regulation of our body temperature. To this end, an average person has 2-4 million sweat glands, which –depending on heat or cold, day- or year time, release sweat on the skin´s surface. ..

... but not always welcomed!

When symptoms of hyperhidrosis sweat secretion is impaired, ie it produces too much sweat. The problem can affect the whole body or locally occur at certain points. Especially the palms or soles (60%), the armpits (40%) and the head concerned (10%).

Excessive sweating is usually experienced by those affected as a psychological burden that limits them in their private, social and professional environment. The desire for a gentle reduction of the increased sweat production can now be met in particular by treatment with botulinum toxin A, but also by medical or surgical means.

Where does excessive sweating from?

In most cases, excessive sweating has no apparent cause - especially not when it is localized on the following body parts - the palms, soles, armpits, and the face . Sometimes the increased sweating is also the result of another disease, such as an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism).

Excessive sweating - a vicious circle

People with abnormally increased sweating react sensitively to different stimuli, for example to physical or emotional stress, but also to spicy foods. The amount of sweat is disproportionately high and shows itself in damp palms and soles, armpits and wet beads of sweat on the forehead. Body odor and foot infections often occur concomitantly. All this represents an extremely strong psychological stress for those affected, leading to them e.g. avoiding hand shaking with other people due to their clammy hands. This often leads to a vicious circle of sweating, anxiety, and hence, even more sweating.

What can be done against excessive sweating?

Nowadays, you can luckily do much against excessive sweating. A purely medical treatment is possible, but because of its side effects (dry mouth, dizziness) it is being avoided in most cases. As a gentler form of therapy the injection of botulinum toxin A has proven successful, helping to inhibit the production of sweat for a duration of 4-6 months. This method can be applied to all affected areas of the body - the palms, soles, armpits and forehead. Iontophoresis is reversible, and thus a long-term treatment in which by means of the application of a weak direct current or a pulse current, sweat is being prevented. The therapy is suitable for hands and feet as well as for shoulders, face and neck / back. Furthermore, in the area of armpits, the hyperhidrosis can be removed through a suction of the sweat glands. This is usually durable for several years. This intervention is regularly being taken on by Dr. Karl Schuhmann at the Laser Medicine Center Rhine-Ruhr.

Which method is best suited for me?

Each of the above options has advantages and disadvantages. The individual therapies can also be combined with one another – this can be offered when for example multiple areas of the body are affected. Such options can be illustrated and discussed in detail during the medical consultation prior to treatment. Here you can decide together with the doctor which method / methods combination suits you best.
